Welcome

The Hague University of Applied Sciences (De Haagse Hogeschool)

With more than 22,000 students from over 143 nationalities, The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) is one of the most international in the Netherlands. Our programmes tap into the professional world reflecting developments in industry and providing students real life experiences. We encourage independent thinking, exploring other people’s perspectives, through cross-cultural debate and teamwork.

There are two types of universities in Dutch higher education: traditional research universities and universities of applied sciences. As a university of applied sciences, THU focuses on training and career preparation. Our bachelors take three or four years, while masters take 12 or 18 months. We put less emphasis on degree academic research, which means that students may be asked to take a bridging course to go on to study a masters at a Dutch research university.

Bachelors degrees at THUAS will prepare you for international career. By graduation, you will have studied or worked in another country, done business in a different language and mixed with people from other cultures. Our regular bachelors programmes last for four years. Some programmes also offer a three-year fast-track version.

Hands-on experience
THU believes that it is important to reflect what is happening in the professional world, so our programmes are constantly updated to reflect developments in business and industry. Students attend lectures, skill training sessions and workshops, analyse real-life scenarios and work with companies. All programmes are geared around group and individual project work simulating realistic situations. Students are encouraged to think independently and explore other people’s perspectives, through debates and teamwork. They also write professional reports and give presentations during assignments.

International emphasis
The world is becoming a smaller, more accessible place. That’s why all of our courses have a strong international emphasis, with opportunities for placements in The Hague and overseas. Students mix with a diverse community on campus, with students and staff from 146 different nationalities.

International exchanges
THU sends hundreds of students to study or to do work placements abroad every year as part of their international, cross-cultural experience. We work with around 300 global exchange partner institutions based in the USA, South America, Europe, South Africa, the Far East and the Middle East.

Internships on bachelors programmes
During the latter stages of the bachelors programmes, students get the chance to spend around five months on internships in the Netherlands or abroad. They can tap into THU’s network of global, commercial and not-for-profit organisations and travel as far as Japan, Argentina and the USA. The internship forms the basis of the final report and presentation.

Future careers
A bachelors programme at THU is the perfect stepping-stone into the global labour market. Students gain the key life skills needed to be a world citizen and a good grasp of the English language. They get to test the market and think about their career directions during THU’s exchanges and internships. Graduates leave with a strong cultural awareness gained from working alongside international students and staff.
